Learning Spanish

...and some Russian.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine told me about duolingo.com, an awesome app and website for language learning. I had installed it on my mobile before, but never really did anything in it, and then I promptly forgot about it.


I installed it again, this time with the intention of at least attempting to learn a new language. Chose Spanish because it is the second most widely spoken language in the world (and it was the first language listed on duolingo).

Now it has been 28 days since I started, and I have been spending a minimum of 15 minutes a day on it. The results are astounding. I can read Spanish (mostly) and understand it pretty well.
It suddenly feels as if a whole new cordoned of section of this world has opened up to me.

So after feeling this awesome after just adding one new language to my arsenal, I thought why not one more. French and Italian have a lot in common with Spanish, so they were out. As I did not want to get confused between languages at this early stage of learning Spanish.

After a lot of deliberation I chose Russian, as its alphabet is quite different but not too alien looking to me. Ever since, I have made it my goal to spend ten minutes every day on learning Russian (not more, not less). Lets see how much time will it take me on getting a good grasp on it.

This experience has taught me something very important.

Learning a language is not difficult, it just takes a little bit time every day. Repetition and routine is the key. Don't try to memorize any word, just let it be. It is okay if you forget, the more times you look it up the more it will remain in your memory.
